Shadowing

User observations are used to analyze the user in a real, non-simulated situation and thus to learn more about his or her behaviour, needs and problems. Shadowing is a more dynamic observation, in which users are actively followed in order to understand the entire activity.

Description

Step 1

At the beginning, the participants define the situation and the aspects to be observed.

Step 2

Afterwards, the participants perform the observation and document what they have seen in the format of photos, sketches or notes.

Step 3

If necessary, the participants can follow up a user interview in order to clarify observations.

Step 4

Participants then view all the collected material and analyze the results. In this way, patterns of action can be identified, unsatisfied needs can be identified and innovation potentials derived.
